Punch Patterns

A punch pattern is an abstract rule that describes a range of punch combinations.

The benefit of punch patterns is that they help boxers practice systematically by helping them mentally chunk a variety of combinations.

Below is an example of one punch pattern and a range of combinations that fall under it:

Pattern

  • Left, Right, A, Right, Left, B

Combinations

Straight Punch Pattern:

  • Jab, Cross, Left Hook, Cross, Jab, Right Hook

  • Jab, Cross, Left Uppercut, Cross, Jab, Right Uppercut

  • Jab, Cross, Right Slip, Cross, Jab, Left Slip

  • Jab, Cross, Right Roll, Cross, Jab, Left Roll

  • Jab, Cross, Left Block, Cross, Jab, Right Block

Hook Pattern:

  • Left Hook, Right Hook, Jab, Right Hook, Left Hook, Cross

  • Left Hook, Right Hook, Left Uppercut, Right Hook, Left Hook, Right Uppercut

  • Left Hook, Right Hook, Right Slip, Right Hook, Left Hook, Left Slip
